Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick some of their favorite work from the expansive catalog. This week: upcoming SECRET WARRIORS wirter Jonathan Hickman looks back at his participation in the LEGION OF MONSTERS series as part of our Halloween Spooktacular!

LEGION OF
MONSTERS:
SATANA #1

"Living Mummy [in LEGION OF MONSTERS: SATANA]—man, this was a lot of fun.

"To recap: I got an e-mail from [editor] John Barber one day asking if I was interested in doing something for Marvel. I, of course, said yes. We talked on the phone and John gave me some dates that he wanted stuff in by, the first of which was, naturally, the script. This was a big deal for me, because I had actually never written a script before—my indie stuff was all thumbnails and jotted down notes—so he kind of held my hand through that, which was nice.

"The other thing I remember about the project was finishing up the art the day before my sister's wedding. I had really wanted to lose about 15 pounds before said wedding so I'd look fetching in my tux, but instead I think I put on five working/snacking around the clock finishing the Living Mummy and Nightly News #3. Suffer for the cause, kids.

"As for the story itself, I wanted to do something kind of unique with the character and really set the whole thing up as a horror story, which, up to that point, you couldn't really describe it as. So, I did a quick origin recap and then spun the character off in a completely new—and hopefully more original—direction. Tonally, probably the best decision I made—and my favorite thing about the story—was the ending and how it left things for the character."
