The Mangler had heard that the Red Skull was searching for a new Chief Operative for group the Skeleton Crew to replace Crossbones. Mother Night gathered a group of men qualified to as replacements. In order to become the next Chief Operative, the group of men would have to combat each other to the death. The Mangler battled Deathstroke and Cutthroat for the prize and during the battle was killed when Cutthroat stabbed him in the back with one of his Admantium blades.
